A Month of Digital Minimalism
A month ago, I blocked my personal social media time sinks from my phone. This immediately opened up more time for my personal projects. Politics almost instantly became background noise, and I was inspired by the digital minimalism efforts of others. All the reclaimed time has allowed me to plan my days more effectively?
So how are things going after a month of this experiment? Am I going to unblock anything?
Nope.
In fact, I'm blocking more. There was a silly mobile game I liked to play while listening to audiobooks. I uninstalled it yesterday and will see if that allows me to reclaim even more time over the next month. It's easy to keep listening to an audiobook and playing a game when it would be better to be doing something else.
As for social media, I still occasionally have to log in on my computer to check my messages from real life friends, but without having it always available on my phone, it's lost its pull, and I have no interest in spending my computer time scrolling.
I'm reading more, learning more, and feeling more present in my actual life. I've even got a daily meditation habit going.
If you've been thinking about trying out digital minimalism, give it a shot for a month. A month is nothing, a tiny commitment. You can always go back.
I won't be.
