Experiments in Life

Day 7 of Digital Minimalism

For those who didn't see the first post about it, I blocked social media websites from my phone.

Still digging it. Politics becomes distant background noise, and you can just enjoy people, even if they believe a lot of really stupid things. (Doesn't everyone?)

One feels a building power of greater concentration. Got some writing done on actual paper, and I think my focus during homeschooling was much improved.

Decided to try running Meta's Llama-4-Scout on my laptop that does not have a dedicated GPU. Heh. It actually worked until it didn't. One had to be quite patient for responses. I plan to run Llama on our much more powerful desktop computer because I have some experiments planned. As for smaller models that do work on my laptop, I'm going to try making some custom versions for different tasks. For example, I would like to have a small model trained on classical texts and some commentaries. We'll see...

ADDED: I like this post about RSS feeds. As part of my digital minimalism efforts, I have switched the newsletters and blogs I like to an RSS reader. Now, instead of having my attention drawn away as things come in, I choose when to open my reader and enjoy the posts and essays on my own terms.
